Syllabus

Course Objectives

The objective of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge and ability to understand: the panorama of Brazilian literature, as well as the fundamental links between the 16th century and the Brazilian modernism of the Sao Paulo Modern Art Week; the peculiarity of the first phase of Modernism and its relationship with the economic development of the 1960s; the authors and characteristics of the three modernist phases, identifying the specificities of the texts and authors studied, starting from the logic of the "anthropophagic" turn of Brazilian Modernism; the regionalist novel in general and the problems of drought and large estates; the specificities of concrete poetry and the connection Anthropophagy-concrete poetry-Tropicalism.

Teaching Methods

frontal lessons, cooperative learning, multimedia laboratory, seminars and round tables with teachers from Italian and foreign universities, self-managed laboratories.

Assessment Methods

The learning assessment includes: an oral exam on the entire program, i.e. the historical-literary path that led to the turning point of Modernism in Brazil, with particular emphasis on the modern art week of São Paulo and the three phases of Brazilian Modernism, with particular emphasis on the first "heroic" phase and in the "regionalist" novel. The evaluation of the oral exam will take place on the basis of the following parameters: knowledge of the fundamental notions of Pré-Modernism and Modernism in the Brazilian context; “Anthropophagy” in the literary and cultural fields; linguistic, ethical and aesthetic turning point in Brazilian society; aesthetic characteristics of the three phases of Brazilian Modernism, with indication of their time, the authors and the main literary works of the three periods; the narration and "deconstructionist" poetry of the first phase and the "regionalist" novel; The Anthropophagy-Concrete Poetry link of the 1950s and Tropicalism in music.

Program: Historical-literary panorama of Brazil; linguistic and literary subalternity of Colonial Brazil; the week of Modern Art in São Paulo and the linguistic, aesthetic and ethical consequences; Anthropological movement: manifesto, authors and main works. The phases of Brazilian Modernism. Literary diversity between "Sudeste and Nordeste".
The Italian presence in Brazilian modernism.
The modernist regionalist novel: Rachel de Queirós and Jorge Amado.
