Course Objectives
LANGUAGE
Acquisition of translation techniques and strategies in the literary, legal, and diplomatic fields from and into French. Mastery of legal logic and argumentation.
Achievement of level C1 language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
LETTORATO
The annual course aims to strengthen the four language skills in French in order to achieve level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
Grammatical objectives: advanced phonetics and grammar with a systematic review of the rules and practical exercises. Observations on the differences between some grammatical structures in French and Italian.
Linguistic and socio-cultural objectives to be achieved: according to the CEFR descriptors:
Advanced level C1: The student “is able to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors, and cohesive devices.”
Course Prerequisites
Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Teaching Methods
Lectures, exercises through translation workshops.
Language practice activities carried out by the Language Expert Collaborators (CEL) of the University Language Centre (CLA), essential to strengthen and achieve the level required at the end of the course.
Attendance at the lessons is strongly recommended in view of the related examination, which will be held at the same time as the French Language and Translation 1 exam and constitutes an integral part of it.
Assessment Methods
Final written and oral exam. The written and oral exams for French Language and Translation 1 and C1 Reading will take place at the same time (check the exam calendar on the website of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures and on the CLA website).
WRITTEN EXAMS: Total duration 4 hours. In order to be admitted to the oral exam, students must have passed all written exams, both language and reading comprehension.
WRITTEN LANGUAGE EXAM: Two translations, from and into French (one literary translation from Italian into French and one legal translation from French into Italian). Time allowed: 2 hours. The assessment will be out of 30. Only a monolingual dictionary may be used for both translations.
C1 READING COMPREHENSION WRITTEN EXAM: Épreuve de synthèse (200-240 words), based on documents provided. Épreuve de compréhension de l'oral with questionnaire. Time allowed: 2 hours.
LANGUAGE ORAL EXAM: The interview, in French, will be graded out of 30 based on the program covered.
C1 READING TEST: The interview, in French, will be graded out of 30 based on the program covered.
GRADING:
The final grade consists of a single grade out of 30, calculated as the average of the grades obtained in the written and oral tests.

LANGUAGE
The course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of the structures of the French language applied to the practice of translation.
The systematic study of the structures of the language, from a terminological and morphosyntactic point of view, will be carried out through translation workshops in which various authentic documents of literary, institutional, journalistic, and diplomatic types will be examined.
Particular emphasis will be placed on linguistic reflection and on terminological and morphosyntactic choices in different specialized fields, from and into French.
The techniques for consulting monolingual dictionaries in their variety will also be explored in greater depth, including aspects related to Francophonie.
LETTORATO (Dr. PATRICIA GERACI)
The topics covered will concern various areas of social, economic, professional, environmental, and cultural life, and will be presented according to the parameters of the DALF C1 certification, some sample tests of which are included in the adopted textbook.
