Syllabus

Course Objectives

Objectives:
1) Become familiar with concepts of literary genre and reception.
2) Recognize the most important poetic forms, rhetoric figures and concepts of rhythm.
3) familiarizing with the notion of intertextuality
4) approaching literary history from an unusual intertextual angle
5) stimulating textual analysis with attention to distinctions of genre.

Course Prerequisites

Students will be familiar with the basic notions of Italian literary history

Teaching Methods

Power-point assisted Lectures; seminars, occasionally conducted by specialist guest speakers

Assessment Methods


Students will take an oral exam, conversing on the topics dealt with in class and listed in this syllabus. They will be asked 6-7 questions meant to assess their ability to express themselves correctly, and their knowledge of the historical context, the socio-cultural issues, as well as the stylistic and thematic peculiarities of the authors’ works. Their ability to understand and conduct a critical analysis of the literary texts listed in this syllabus will be also assessed.
The final score will be from 0 to 30. Students will pass the exam with a sufficient score if they show a basic knowledge of the topics; they will get an excellent score if they show a very good knowledge of the topics and an ability to develop an in-depth analysis and a critical discourse on them.

Leopardi's Operette Morali: a modern classic.

Reading Operette Morali is an extremely interesting and formative challenge, because it requires several hermeneutic and interdisciplinary means. In fact, knowledge of literary history, philosophy, rhetoric, stylistics, history, linguistics are essential. Therefore, Operette Morali is an exceptional field of study to sharpen critical tools and investigate Italian literature from Leopardi's lucid and eclectic perspective. Operette Morali will be read in the light of Enlightenment and Romantic theories and considering the articulated intertextuality that they contain. The aim is to dig up the different and topical aspects that this now classic text foresees.
