Syllabus

Course Objectives

The candidate will develop a solid understanding of commercial documents of common use in international trade. It will develop in depth knowledge of Incoterms, UCP 600 and the way they are used in trading and banking transaction. Electronic alternatives currently available will be discussed.

Course Prerequisites

Excellent knowledge of contract law. Familiarity with international trade law and practice.

Teaching Methods

Seminars, tutorials and group work.

Assessment Methods

Written exam: a 3500words essay on a set theme. Oral exam on the program. The essay is aimed at ascertaining the student's proficiency in written legal arguments supported by rigour and legal logic. The oral exam is aimed at ascertaining the student's proficiency in the subject.

The course looks in depth at the documentary side of international trade. Sale contracts and letters of credit place a great deal of reliance on documents and this course is aimed at giving the candidates in depth knowledge of this complex and highly litigated area of the law.
