Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course explores the processes of
social change that are rooted in the
interactions between individuals and
groups beyond the borders of national
states. The first module will illustrate the
concepts and the analytical approaches
useful for the study of globalization
processes in a sociological-political key.
The second module will be dedicated to the
dynamics of mobility and migration in
Europe. Particular attention will be paid to
migration processes such as litmus paper
of the experience of difference based on
ethnic and national identity.

perspective; the basic concepts: race,
ethnicity and nation. How nations are
formed: comparative theories; national
identities and nationalism; the
cosmopolitanism between the
philosophical model and cultural practice;
globalization and politics: the sociological
perspective; transnationalism and
transnational practices; ethnic prejudice
and xenofobia.
Forms and dimension of mobility in
contemporary society; international
migration in Europe: a historical-
sociological framework; the regulation of
migration in Europe; the Euopean
citizenship and international integratio; the
second generations; EU enlargment
policies and the Turkey case; mobility,
migration and politics.
