Course Objectives

This course contributes to the educational objectives of the three-year degree program in Sociology and Criminology by providing the basic theoretical and terminological tools for understanding sociocultural reality, developing the "scenario" skills necessary to enable students to recognize the distinctive features and critical issues of the digital and global context in which they live and in which they will operate as future professionals.

More specifically, with regard to knowledge and understanding, by the end of the course, students are expected to have:
- acquired the ability to define, distinguish, and connect the theoretical concepts of culture and society;
- acquired full mastery of the sociological concepts of norm, organization, socialization, and public opinion;
- acquired awareness of the communication revolutions that have occurred throughout history and their cultural and social consequences, with particular reference to the new modernity that emerged from the digital revolution;
- acquired knowledge of the theories of mass communication and those developed specifically in relation to the advent of digital technology;
- critically examined the cultural and social role of new media, and the concepts of networks, followers, influencers, fashion, and mainstream media;
- learned to distinguish different types of digital risk, from specifically regulated criminal offenses to other socially relevant phenomena;
- became aware of the conditions that contribute to greater private and public safety within the virtual social environment.
Regarding communication skills, the ability to express oneself correctly, clearly, pertinently, and well-argued, along with the ability to refer to sources other than those recommended, is considered of the utmost importance. Achieving such a result is also considered indicative of advanced learning ability.

Contents

The Sociology of New Media course is geared toward understanding and discussing opportunities and risks associated with the advent of digital media and the so-called "megamodernity." Risk is defined as a threat to security, itself understood as privacy (protection of personal data), safety (certainty of identity; protection of complex systems), transparency (online availability of documents, sources, content), and, above all, accuracy (reliability of sources and content and curation of online content, its appropriateness to the values of a plural and pluralistic society).
The authomatized, unaware use of digital media and of the multiplicity of content created and transmitted through them is hence identified as the primary dimension of exploration, drawing on the theories of mass communication that have guided the understanding of the cultural changes over the past century, brought about by the advent of revolutionary media such as television, on the one hand, and on the contemporary theories developed since the advent of the internet, on the other.

The course program and study materials are designed and presented to focus on how social interaction has changed with the internet and social media, and on the new dynamics of dissemination and internalization of behavioral models, beliefs, ideas, opinions, and values.

To achieve an adequate understanding of contemporary digital reality, the course also primarily aims to lay the foundation for a solid and preparatory sociological understanding of the cultural and communicative processes that define societies.

Course Language

On request, the teacher is willing to support Erasmus students with meetings conducted in English meant to facilitate the understanding of certain topics.
