Course Objectives


By the end of the course each student is expected to develop a capacity for independent analysis of works of contemporary art, finding his or her way around different methodologies of art historical enquiry.

Course Prerequisites


Students must have in-depth knowledge of institutional program of the three-year course

Teaching Methods


Lectures and laboratory exercises.

Assessment Methods


Oral examination with final grade.

Texts


Students must have in-depth knowledge of institutional program of the three-year course in any manual; however, the following is recommended:
- P. De Vecchi, E. Cerchiari, Arte nel Tempo, Volume III, tomi 1 e 2, Bompiani, Milano 2000.


The following texts are required for the 6-credit program:

F. Benzi, Arte in Italia tra le due guerre, Bollati Boringhieri, Torino 2013
J. Nigro Covre, I. Mitrano, Arte contemporanea: tra astrattismo e realismo 19181956, Carocci editore, Roma 2011.

For the 9-credit exam, it is necessary to add:
F. Poli, F. Bernardelli, Mettere in scena l’arte contemporanea. Dallo spazio dell’opera allo spazio intorno all’opera, Johan& Levi editore, Monza 2016.

Contents


In the first 6 credits, the course will develop various methodologies for approaching contemporary artwork, emphasizing interdisciplinary references. Exercises will enhance students' ability to independently and critically interpret artworks. Attention will be paid to specific moments in 20th-century Italian art, interpreted from an international perspective.
The next 3 credits are dedicated to an in-depth study of contemporary art exhibition spaces.

Students must attend lectures and exercises, which are preparatory tools for independent study of the artists and their works, through the testing of theoretical and practical tools and methods. For non-attending students, in addition to the general program, they must read:
