Syllabus

Course Objectives


The aim of the course unit is to make students acquire theoretical, critical and methodological abilities in relation to the study of literature. Students must be able to read and interpret literary texts in English (both prose and poetry) and their contexts, and to appreciate their stylistic characteristics; moreover, the course aims at developing powers of critical/analytical thinking alongside an appreciation of the craft of writing and the interrelationships between texts, together with the ability to apply such techniques to primary/secondary texts. Module 1 will investigate nineteenth-century English culture and society by means of some canonical novels by Jane Austen, Mary Shelley, Charlotte Brontë and Charles Dickens. Module 2 will start from the cultural context following the Second World War to explore Philip Larkin’s poetry whose innovative feature lies in the return to pre-modernist poetic style and diction. Critical and methodological support will be given to students at the beginning of the course.
Abilities: At the end of the course students must be able to discuss and interpret the underlying values of nineteenth-century English society and to appreciate how issues such as gender, religion and science affected attitudes; students must be able to compare, evaluate and interpret primary sources in order to develop and support historical arguments and to communicate their own ideas successfully to debates about Romantic and Victorian Britain.
Self-assessment: Students must demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of key theoretical issues, show an ability to close read and analyse both primary texts and relevant theoretical interventions, and finally demonstrate an ability to develop an independent critical position in relation to these.
Communicative skills: Students must evidence an ability to talk about contexts, topics and narrative modes related to the primary texts in a clear and appropriate way, and to enter literary texts into a dialogue with theoretical texts.

Course Prerequisites


An intermediate-level competence in the English language is necessary to read and understand the primary sources.

Teaching Methods


Lectures, guided reading of texts and multimedia/internet resources. Conferences and seminars will be organized throughout the semester. It is recommended that students regularly attend classes. However, non-attending students should contact Professor Soccio before taking the exam.

Assessment Methods


The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Contents


Course title: “Literary Paths in English Prose and Poetry”. The course unit consists of two modules:
Module 1: “The Nineteenth-century Novel: Texts, Contexts and Narrative Strategies” (6 credits), investigates the themes that are peculiar to the nineteenth-century English culture and society through the analysis of some English "canonical" novels (Jane Eyre, Mary Shelley, Charlotte Brontë, Charles Dickens) which are authoritative instances of nineteenth-century novel writing.
Module 2, “Philip Larkin and the English Poetry of the 1950s” (3 credits), is focussed on the poetry of the '50s and Philip Larkin in particular, whose innovative work is plunged into the cultural atmosphere of the years following World War II.
