Course Objectives

General aims of the Course.
The course aims to provide students with the methodological tools necessary to read and interpret contemporary architecture. Lectures will briefly illustrate the development of architectural practice through a carefully selected selection of architects and works presented within their cultural, social, and economic contexts, historicizing the role of clients, design orientations, and execution techniques. The ultimate goal of the course is to enable students to acquire the basic cognitive and critical tools necessary to understand the historical evolution of architecture from the late 18th century to the 21st century, considering its various components. Secondly, it will stimulate reflection and research in relation to the concrete design commitment required in other courses.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites.

Teaching Methods

Didactic Methodologies
The didactic program is comprised of a series of theoretical lessons and
practical lessons that follow the sequence of topics described in the
program, enhanced by the projection of images and didactic material
(photocopies and slides). Each lesson is followed by a brief discussion in
which the students are invited to express their personal opi
regarding the arguments examined or on the architectural wo
illustrated. In order to prepare for the Examination, students can use all
the didactic material offered by the tutor at the end of the lesson. For
explanations and further detail, individual meetings during the hours of
reception are provided.

Assessment Methods

Assessment methods
The final assessment consists of an oral exam that will
focus on a discussion of the main topics covered during the
lessons and included in the syllabus. Students must demonstrate knowledge of
architectural works in their historical and cultural context by describing,
also with the aid of simple freehand drawings, their formal,
structural, and stylistic characteristics.
