Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Knowledge and understanding of: 1. Basic concepts of drawing (both freehand and with the use of equipment). 2. Scientific foundations in the field of architectural representation. Two training courses are necessary to approach the discipline: manual drawing and the exercise of technical drawing. In the first case we contemplate drawing from life (the act of perception and graphic translation), while in the second there are the application procedures that derive from the theoretical principles of Descriptive Geometry. In addressing, therefore, the four aforementioned traditional methods, the historical context of architectural representation will be taken into account, depending on the subsequent teachings relating to the knowledge of built architecture and design. To address the latter, knowledge of the procedures and the acquisition of the technical standards that guide the executive documents according to official indications will be necessary. Furthermore, we will dedicate ourselves to digital drawing through the use of some software that will allow an alternative approach to traditional graphic representation.

Course Prerequisites

Conoscenza elementare dei tre modelli geometrici di base. Cognizioni di disegno e dei periodi fondamentali della storia occidentale. Dimestichezza con l’uso del computer e rudimenti di disegno automatico.

Teaching Methods

The Descriptive Geometry topics, developed in eight hours per week, including lectures and graphic applications to be carried out in the classroom, will be assessed by the students through exercises to be carried out weekly at home, and will be part of a personal portfolio to be submitted for the exam. For the best outcome of the latter, weekly reviews of the papers will be scheduled. Every week there will be two hours dedicated to digital drawing with related exercises. Every two weeks, for an hour, we will tackle the reading of historical images with communications accompanied by illustrations of important examples which constitute a reference for the representation. Contact between teacher and student, as well as by email, also takes place through the University website: http://elearning.unich.it/course/view.php?id=141. The topics of the lessons with related images and the exercises will be stored on this page.

Assessment Methods

At the end of the lessons divided into four groups, the students will be asked to verify what has been assumed, through graphic-theoretical exercises, keeping in mind that the respective evaluations will constitute the average of the final grade. At the exam, three tables will be presented focusing on the three models (D.P.O., Axonometries, Perspectives) applied to a residential building of contemporary architecture, agreed with the teacher of Architectural Composition 1. Plans, elevations and sections of this building will have to be reworked with graphic scale and create the aforementioned tables digitally. The in-depth study of scale and the use of the materials of which the project is made will be carried out with the Materials teacher. It will be the student's responsibility to draw up an illustrated critical report on the forms of graphic communication adopted by the designer of the assigned subject. This report will cover the entire work of the designer, in the analysis of the graphic and geometric aspects of the various projects which will be presented in a digital projection before the closing of the course. The materials produced, appropriately reviewed periodically, will also be commented on by the student at the time of the exam set on official dates on the specific University website, for which the student must register in time.

Contents

The aim of the course is to allow learning of the scientific foundations of representation, i.e. to introduce the study of the theory and applications of Descriptive Geometry. The fundamental points relate to the 4 traditional methods - orthogonal projections, axonometric projections, perspectives, dimensioned projections -, considered both in the context of the history of architectural representation and as a function of the teachings relating to architectural surveying and project drawing. Further topics are the study of elementary geometry and shadow theory.

Course Language

Italian

More information

Students are asked to have a minimum supply of elementary tools for manual drawing (squares, compass, cardboard, pencil, etc.), and the use of the computer, equipped with special software (which will be indicated during the course), to follow the lessons and carry out the technical tables of the exercises. All papers produced as part of the course, duly revised, must be presented at the final interview, in A3 paper and digital formats. It should be noted that the Descriptive Geometry course is coordinated with other courses: Architectural Composition 1; History of Architecture 1; Materials and design of construction elements.
