Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims at learning the scientific foundations of representation, i.e. the study of the theory and applications of Descriptive Geometry, with particular reference to its 4 traditional methods - orthogonal projections, axonometric projection, perspective, quoted projections -, considered in the context of the history of architectural representation and as a function of subsequent teachings relating to architectural survey and project design.
Additional teaching objectives include: the knowledge and ability to understand basic drawing concepts; the fundamental knowledge in the field of architectural representation; the study of shadow theory; the basics of digital drawing.
In addition, the course is coordinated (residential theme) with the courses of History of Architecture 1, Architectural Composition 1, Materials and Design of Building Elements.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of the representation methods, of drawing tools and techniques. Basic skills in using computer and common softwares.

Teaching Methods

The topics of Descriptive Geometry and Digital Drawing will be addressed through lectures and experimented with laboratory methodology with exercises that will be delivered to the exam. To accompany the student to the realization of the weekly exercises and the final tables will be fixed regular reviews, individual and collective, through which to verify the progress of the documents and related knowledge, skills and abilities.

Assessment Methods

At the end of the course, the students will be asked to demonstrate what they have learned during the course through graphic-theoretical exercises. The final mark will also include the evaluation of the drawings realized in progress and of the final ones - one for each projective model - in which a small building, chosen from those proposed by the lecturer, will be represented.

The texts in the bibliography will be presented, and if necessary supplemented, during the course of the semester, and information will be made available via the course's online platform (https://elearning.unich.it).

Contents

Starting from the logical tools of geometry and their historical-critical framing, they will face double orthogonal projections, central projections (perspective), axonometric projections and quoted projections. Moreover, the drawing of arches and vaults and the Theory of Shadows will also be exposed. An integrated module (20 hours taught by Prof. Alessandro Basso) will be specifically dedicated to Digital Design.
