Course Objectives


Product design 1 teaching contributes to the achievement of the general objectives of the Course through critical reflection and design simulation applied to the field of product design. Through the theory and practice of design, the student develops both the ability to observe and understand the instances of innovation that emerge from the contemporary technological, socioeconomic and cultural context, and the skills and competences to invent innovative product solutions with respect to needs and desires of people, both in consideration of the needs of the companies that carry out its production.

The Product design 1 course has the specific objective of:
- introduce the student to design methods and tools;
- initiate and direct students' design activity towards design-driven innovation processes; support students in identifying and learning about masters and design objects;
- encourage students to form their own identity and professional orientation;
- develop students' creative and prefigurative abilities through design simulation on the most up-to-date innovation themes of product design.

Course Prerequisites


No specific knowledge and skills are required.

Teaching Methods


The Product design 1 course is organized into: lectures (presentations/slideshows); meetings with guests from the business and professional world (seminars, workshops); group and individual exercises with ongoing evaluations; collective and individual reviews (presentations and choral discussions with the teachers).

Assessment Methods


The Product design 1 course includes three ongoing assessments expressed with a suitability judgment or with a rating scale (insufficient, sufficient, good, excellent):
- first ongoing assessment with judgment of suitability relating to the first group exercise (1. Blu sky research)
- second ongoing evaluation expressed with a rating scale, relating to the second group exercise (2. Product Brief)
- third ongoing evaluation expressed with a rating scale, relating to the third group exercise (3. Product concept)
- fourth ongoing evaluation expressed with a rating scale, relating to the fourth individual exercise (3. Concept Development)

The exam is individual and is based on the critical discussion of the project, also taking into account the opinions of ongoing evaluations. The exam consists in the critical discussion of the overall results of the project experience.

Product design 1 teaching provides basic training in the field of product design and directs the student, starting from the first year of the course, to the conception and creative development of innovative products, through theoretical knowledge and application. practice of the Design Process methodology, referring to the research and analysis, brief, concept and concept development phases.

Product design 1 teaching takes place in the first semester. For information regarding the classroom and timetables, please refer to the CdS in Design calendar. Attendance is optional, but strongly recommended. The final test is the same for attending and non-attending students. The lesson calendar and teaching activities are provided at the beginning of the course. Student office hours are on Wednesdays from 11:00 to 13:00 by appointment via email: amarano@unich.it.
