Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (29/09/2025 - 19/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to:
- bring students closer to the complexity and meaning of communication in its various forms, as well as to the basic concepts and topics of communication design;
- introduce students to communication methods, tools, techniques and technologies, developing specific knowledge and skills to manage perceptual mechanisms and visual languages;
- foster knowledge of chromatic systems and elementary techniques of visual representation, of the basic typographic rules and glossary, of editorial standards, of typographical styles and of the layout project.

The Communication Design 1 course has the specific aim of encouraging the acquisition of theoretical knowledge of visual communication with the practical study of the basic elements of the project (images, colors, typography, layout):
1) Theoretical knowledge: meaning and value of communication, the different forms of communication, the declinations of communication design, from visual communication to graphic design. In-depth study of the basic tools of graphic design, the principles and elements of the project: images, colors, typography, layout;
2) Practical knowledge: practical application of theoretical tools.
The use of specific software for editing raster and vector images, for vector drawing and desktop publishing is envisaged.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures (theoretical lessons by the teacher and external interventions with national and international guests); practical exercises and written tests with ongoing assessments; single and collective reviews; presentations and joint discussions of the projects.

Assessment Methods

The student will be evaluated on the basis of the ongoing results of the individual and group exercises and of the written tests that will take place during the duration of the course, as well as through the results of the final project.
The ongoing assessments include both written assessments and marks out of thirty, and partially contribute to the final assessment (in a non-arithmetic way but focused on the analysis of the individual student's growth path).

The exam is individual and is based on a critical discussion of the personal contribution given to the final project, also considering the judgments and marks of the ongoing exercises.
The documents will be considered on the principle of originality, the quality of the technical performance, consistency and feasibility with respect to the design purpose.

The Communication Design 1 course foresees three practical exercises in itinere whose evaluations are expressed with a differentiated judgment scale:
Exercise 1: analysis and redesign of a graphic project. Rating scale: partial assessment commented by the teacher (insufficient, sufficient, good, excellent).
Exercise 2: Development of a coordinated graphic project (typographic logo, brochure, website layout). Evaluation scale: partial grade out of thirty;
Exercise 3 (final project): conception, design and development of a coordinated communication plan (branding basics, offline campaign, online campaign). Evaluation scale: partial grade out of thirty.

The exam is individual and is based on the critical discussion of the final project, also considering the judgments of the ongoing assessments.
The exam consists in the presentation of the results of the last exercise (communication plan) and in the critical discussion of the overall results of the design experience.
The votes are expressed out of thirty.
