Syllabus

Course Objectives

The Habitat Drawing course (12 CFU) aims to provide students of the Sustainable Habitat degree course with fundamental graphic and representational skills. Its primary objective is to build a solid instrumental and methodological base, essential to successfully face subsequent exams and to prepare students for a professional career in the field of territorial and architectural representation.

Course Prerequisites

basic knowledge of computer equipment

Teaching Methods

The course adopts an integrated, practice-oriented teaching approach that combines the transmission of theoretical knowledge with intensive practical work. The main methodologies are:

Intensive Workshops and Labs (Learning by Doing): The core of the course is represented by guided practical sessions for both analogue and digital drawing. Students will participate in workshops dedicated to refining manual techniques (chiaroscuro, hatching) and mastering specialized software (CAD, GIS, Adobe Suite). The goal is to foster active learning and direct experimentation through targeted exercises.

Project-Based Learning: Theory and practice converge in a final project that students will develop throughout the semester. This approach allows them to integrate all the skills acquired—from manual to digital representation—into the creation of complex deliverables. The partial submissions scheduled during the course will allow us to monitor individual progress and provide continuous feedback.

Critiques and Visual Analysis: In-class "critique" sessions will be fundamental moments for discussing ongoing work, critically analyzing outputs, and receiving constructive feedback. These discussions, alongside the analysis of real case studies (historical drawings, contemporary projects, photographs), aim to develop not only technical skills but also critical thinking and the ability to communicate effectively through drawing.

Assessment Methods

The course uses an integrated teaching methodology that combines lectures, practical exercises and intensive workshops.
1)Project Laboratory: A final laboratory, based on assigned topics, will allow students to apply in an integrated way all the notions learned during the course.
2)Partial Deliveries: Intermediate deliveries ("partial deliveries") are planned that will allow to monitor the individual progress of each student and to evaluate the growth of their graphic and representational skills.
3)Final Evaluation: The final evaluation will be based on the quality of the works produced during the final laboratory and on the improvement demonstrated in the intermediate deliveries.

Contents

The course is designed to guide students on a comprehensive learning journey, starting from the foundations of analogue drawing and progressing to the most advanced digital drawing techniques. The first part of the course focuses on developing manual skills and visual perception through practical workshops and the study of manual representation techniques like chiaroscuro, hatching, and managing color to create depth and volume. We will then delve into geometric representation methods, including perspective, orthogonal projections, and axonometry in all their variants. In parallel, lectures will explore the history of representation, analyzing urban drawing at various scales and teaching how to represent the relationship between solids and voids, as well as different types of historical and contemporary buildings. Once these fundamental skills are mastered, the course shifts to digital drawing. This phase introduces essential software tools for the profession: from vector drawing with CAD to basic concepts of using GIS platforms and managing digital terrain models (DEM/DTM) in a 3D environment. Students will learn to draw masterplans and contour lines, graphically enhance their outputs using software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and manage scale transitions by adding details to improve communication. The final part of the course is dedicated to 3D representation, exploring architectural and landscape photography, rendering, and territorial modeling. This transition from 2D to 3D is crucial for providing students with the most contemporary tools, paving the way for success in subsequent exams and their future careers. The program concludes with a final workshop where students can apply all the acquired knowledge to an assigned theme, supported by partial submissions to monitor their individual growth in graphic skills.

More information

The course will always be in mixed mode, each lesson will be recorded and summaries will be uploaded along with other material in the Teams virtual room related to the course, students will always have a connection with the teacher 5 days a week to schedule revisions, ask for clarifications or targeted insights. There will also be some lessons in which there will be external guests who will propose extra seminars related to the topics of the course.
