Syllabus

Course Objectives


The teaching unit provides the critical and technical-operational tools to use the most innovative materials and processes from the point of view of environmental issues (ecological materials, biocomposites, biomimetics, smart materials, etc.) in the various design applications. The teaching module of Sustainable Materials will provide the student with the knowledge, skills and abilities to:

identify environmentally friendly materials using specialized databases (material libraries).
identify and recognize the physical, chemical, mechanical, and aesthetic-communicative qualities of materials with low environmental impact.
choose materials with no or minimal toxicity / harmfulness and renewable and bio-compatible materials.
choose materials with efficient recycling technologies.

use biodegradable, recyclable and low environmental impact materials in an appropriate manner from the technological and the evolution of language point of view.

Course Prerequisites


The teaching of Sustainable Materials is an integrated unit in the Eco Product Design Laboratory. Therefore, the prerequisites indicated for the aforementioned Laboratory are valid.

ex-cathedra lectures.
exercises with ongoing assessments.
meetings with companies.

Assessment Methods


Type of exam: Oral
Learning assessment procedures: the integrated teaching unit of Sustainable Materials includes ongoing assessments. The ongoing assessments obtained by the student in the teaching unit contribute to the determination of the final and unique assessment of the Laboratory exam. The examination session consists of the presentation of the project results and the critical discussion of the overall results of the design experience and the innovative product solutions developed, as a synthesis of the knowledge acquired in the teaching units of the Laboratory.

Contents


The Sustainable Materials course is a teaching unit of the Eco Product Design Laboratory. The course is delivered in an integrated form with Ecodesign. Specifically, the course examines the treatment of innovative materials (biocomposites, biomimetics, smart materials) in relation to product and process innovation, with particular attention to new issues related to the circular economy and the ecological transition. The student will take into account the theoretical contributions and knowledge acquired in the Sustainable Materials unit for the conscious choice and application of materials in the design and project development process proposed by the Laboratory activities.
