Course Prerequisites

The student must possess basic knowledge (anatomy, biology, physiology, physics, chemistry) and the necessary skills to successfully follow the course.

Teaching Methods

The course will consist of lectures.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment consists of an oral exam, which may be accompanied by a partial written test.

Texts

Students will be provided with lecture slides, along with articles and reviews from the literature related to the topics covered in class. However, throughout the three-year MED/50 program, students may also find the following textbooks useful:

- Glenn P. Gravlee, Richard F. Davis, Alfred H. Stammers, Ross M. Ungerleider
Cardiopulmonary Bypass - Principles and Practice, 3rd Edition
Publisher: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins

- Glenn P. Gravlee, Richard F. Davis, John Hammon, Barry Kussman
Cardiopulmonary Bypass and Mechanical Support - Principles and Practice, 4th Edition
Publisher: Lippincott Williams and Wilkins

- Florian Falter, Albert C. Perrino, Robert A. Baker
Cardiopulmonary Bypass, 3rd Edition
Publisher: Cambridge Medicine

Contents

The course provides an in-depth description of the various components of the heart-lung machine, tracing the historical development that led to the current devices. The main elements of the machine will be analyzed in detail, with a specific focus on biocompatibility and its significance. To facilitate students' understanding, fundamental concepts of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology will be reviewed, with particular attention to the regulatory mechanisms of endothelial function and the processes underlying vascular alterations, such as endothelial function/dysfunction and the role of nitric oxide (NO).

Course Language
