Syllabus

Course Objectives

Acquisition of knowledge concerning the structural and physiological characteristics of microorganisms, concepts of pathogenicity and microbial epidemiology, of host-microorganism interactions. The Module aims to provide the Student with the cognitive and methodological skills and tools necessary to: - relate the specific characteristics of the composition, structure, and physiology of bacteria to the onset and evolution of infectious diseases- apply knowledge of bacterial biology to the choice of drugs for antibiotic treatment and the choice of methods for their prevention- acquire the theoretical knowledge necessary to make full use of the contents of the subsequent courses. The expected learning outcomes are consistent with the general provisions of the Bologna Process and the specific provisions of Directive 2005/36/EC. They are found within the European Qualifications Framework (Dublin descriptors) as follows:1. Knowledge and understanding. The student will be able to:- describe the fundamental aspects of General Microbiology and Virology.- acquire a good knowledge of Medical Microbiology and Virology, particularly regarding pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnostics, therapy, and prophylaxis of infections.2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student will be able to:- use the knowledge acquired for the independent study of aspects related to the specific field to which the student will dedicate himself in the context of his professional activity.- use specific scientific terminology appropriately.3. Autonomy in intellectual production and critical judgment. The student will be able to:rework the study material (slides, notes taken in class, recommended texts) to identify the key concepts.4. Communication skills. The student will be able to:- use the scientific language of Microbiology and Virology.

Course Prerequisites

Those listed in the didactic regulation.

Teaching Methods

The theoretical knowledge will be acquired through the attendance to the lessons, integrated with the study of the recommended textbooks and the material provided by the teacher in the classroom.

Assessment Methods

Oral examThe Integrated Course examination consists of a single exam, including all disciplines, always to be taken in the same examination session. An oral exam is used to verify the student's preparation in each of the integrated course modules. The Commission will evaluate the student's ability to apply knowledge and whether the skills are adequate to support and solve problems of a microbiological nature. The following will also be evaluated: judgment-making, communication, and learning skills, as indicated in the Dublin descriptors. The exam will be graded on thirtieths based on the following criteria:- Not suitable: significant deficiencies and/or inaccuracies in knowledge and understanding of the topics; limited analysis and synthesis skills; frequent generalizations.- 18-20: Knowledge and understanding of the topics are sufficient with possible imperfections; analysis and synthesis skills and independent judgment are sufficient.- 21-23: Knowledge and understanding of the topics routine; Correct analysis and synthesis skills with coherent logical argumentation.- 24-26: Fair knowledge and understanding of the topics; good analysis and synthesis skills with arguments expressed rigorously.- 27-29: Complete knowledge and understanding of the topics; notable analysis and synthesis skills. Good independent judgment.- 30-30L: Excellent level of knowledge and understanding of the topics. Notable analysis and synthesis skills and independent judgment. Arguments expressed originally.Honors (30L) can be awarded if proposed unanimously by the Commission.
