Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (07/10/2025 - 31/01/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Provide students with the fundamentals of Physics needed for carrying out their future activities, with particular regard to understanding the physical principles underlying the functioning and use of the equipment necessary for the control and detection of living matter phenomena in the biological and medical context. Allow the students to acquire the basic preparation for the correct use of this instrumentation.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES

Knowledge and Understanding

At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate knowledge of:
- the basics of particle and fluid mechanics, applying the concepts to the understanding of the operation of laboratory instruments such as centrifuges and chromatographs.
- the basics of thermodynamics to understand the functioning of thermometers.
- the basics of electrostatics, electrodynamics, and electromagnetism and their connection to methods such as electrophoresis and mass spectrometry.
- the basics of optics to understand the functioning of the optical microscope, as well as spectrophotometry.

Making Independent Judgments

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- using the concepts studied during the course, identify and critically evaluate physical phenomena encountered in other courses and during the internship.

Communication Skills

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:

- use the technical language of Applied Physics.

Course Prerequisites

The proposed program will also allow students who have not previously matured disciplinary knowledge to achieve the training objectives indicated. There are therefore no prerequisites, but we recommend a knowledge of the notions of mathematics present in all high school programs.

Teaching Methods

Assessment Methods

The evaluation method consists of oral examination and the topics under examination will reflect those discussed during the lessons and present in the program. Specifically, both the topics on the basic principles and the application of these topics to the analysis techniques applied during this course of study, will be eaminated. The exam mode and the evaluation method will be indicated by the teacher at the beginning of the course. The evaluation will be based on the knowledge of the topics covered by the exam questions and the students? logical-argumentative skills. For the purpose of the evaluation, the quality of the oral presentation will also be taken into consideration with particular reference to the competence in the use of the specialized lexicon.
The exam result is expressed in thirtieths according to an increasing scale based on the demonstration of knowledge, appropriateness of language, and the logic and coherence of the presentation:
- sufficient but incomplete basic knowledge: score 18-22 thirtieths;
- fair knowledge and clarity of presentation: score 23-25 thirtieths;
- good knowledge and ability to illustrate the topics with appropriate language and mastery of the subject matter: score 26-28 thirtieths;
- excellent knowledge of the topics and excellent presentation skills, critical reasoning: score 28-30 thirtieths.
Honors are awarded to students who demonstrate particularly in-depth knowledge, exceptional presentation skills, and critical reasoning.
