• Identify quality management methods in clinical laboratories, including control and data validation strategies.

Course Prerequisites

- Meet the prerequisites established by the Study Program.
- A foundational understanding of biochemistry, molecular biology, and human physiology is required.

Teaching Methods

- Lectures.

Assessment Methods

Learning will be assessed through an oral exam graded on a scale of thirty points. The exam will cover topics discussed in class.

Texts

The recommended study texts for further insights are:
• M. Ciaccio, G. Lippi, "Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine" (EdiSES)
• Mary Louise Turgeon, "Laboratory Medicine: Tests - When, How, and Why" (Edra)

Contents

The course provides an overview of methodologies used in clinical pathology laboratories, with a focus on key technical aspects. Topics include:
- Organizational structure and workflow management of a clinical pathology laboratory.
- The analytical cycle: pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases, with an emphasis on quality control.
- The impact of analytical and biological variability on diagnostic results and strategies to reduce errors.
- Procedures for collecting, transporting, and storing biological samples.
- Techniques for separation and analysis, including electrophoresis, chromatography, and mass spectrometry.
- Immunochemical methods such as immunoenzymatic and chemiluminescent techniques.
