Syllabus

Course Objectives

The formative objective for the student consists of achieving the following learning outcomes.
Knowledge and understanding.
The course aims at providing the tools of economic analysis for the understanding of international markets’ dynamics, with a focus on trade in goods and services and FDI. The student must know the international economic dynamics at both the micro and the macro level and must know the most appropriate methods and tools of analysis.

Applying knowledge and understanding.
The course aims to transfer to the student the ability to critically interpret international (micro and macro) economic dynamics adopting a scientific and, at the same time, practical approach.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of macroeconomics and microeconomics.

Teaching Methods

Traditional classes, practice with ad hoc software, assignments

Assessment Methods

The verification of the learning outcomes will be carried out through a written and oral examination. In particular:

Knowledge and ability to understand

The verification of knowledge and comprehension skills will be carried out through a written and an oral examination that will cover the whole program with particular attention to the theoretical part and to the critical interpretation of graphs and tables.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding

The ability to apply knowledge and understanding will be evaluated through the participation at a “theory-based” laboratory of empirical analysis; the output of the laboratory will consist of a presentation aimed at assessing the students’ ability to analyse in person (and possibly in team) the international economic dynamics.

The score of the exam is assigned by a vote expressed in thirtieths. The final grade will be an average of the written-oral exam (weight 70%) and the dissertation (weight 30%).

Texts

- lecture notes (slides), references to scientific articles and book chapters will be provided during the course;

- Markusen et al., International Trade, Theory and Evidence. McGraw-Hill.

- Blanchard O., Amighini A., Giavazzi F., Macroeconomics, Global Edition

Contents

The course analyzes the economic process of globalization from the point of view of real markets, with particular attention to trade flows, FDI and protectionism, and international financial markets, with emphasis on the effectiveness of fiscal and monetary policies under different regimes of exchange rate and international capital mobility.
Traditional theories are discussed, based on perfect competition, as well as “New Trade Thoery”, “New New Trade Theory” and “New Economic Geography” models, in which firms operate in imperfectly competitive markets.
The internationalization choices operated by multinational enterprises (MNE) are also addressed.
The final part of the course consists of a laboratory of "theory-based" empirical analysis dedicated to "Gravity Models".

Course Language
