Course Objectives

FORMATIVE OBJECTIVES
The course is part of the specific objectives of the study program aimed at training a professional figure able to: know and understand the concepts of general pharmacology and the main classes of drugs (action mechanisms, therapeutic indications, and side effects).
In particular, the Pharmacology course aims to allow the student to develop the following:
i) the principles of pharmacokinetics (the path of the drug within the human organism, assessed in its qualitative/quantitative aspects) and of the pharmacodynamics (drug/target interactions and analysis of the dose-response relationship); ii) adequate knowledge of the pharmacological basis of therapy, with particular attention to analgesic, anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxant and central nervous system drugs.

EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS
At the end of the course the student, as far as he is competent, will be able to: i) know the pharmacological basis of the therapy; ii) to know the collateral and toxic effects of drugs and the potential interactions between them.
The course will help to provide the student with tools that will enable him to enhance his ability to relate and and collaborate with the care team to accomplish the implementation and development of protocols and guidelines. In addition, the student will be able to plan and implement, in collaboration with other professionals, educational and supportive interventions for the individual and the community for self-management and control of risk factors and health problems.

Course Prerequisites

as required by the course

Teaching Methods

The course includes lectures and interactive lessons.
The course aims to provide the theoretical basis for a reasoned understanding of what the drug produces once introduced into the human organism (pharmacodynamics), considering how it is distributed and modified in the organism (pharmacokinetics). At the same time, particular regard will be taken in linking theoretical knowledge with the evidence emerging from the clinical study results.

Assessment Methods

The learning will be verified through a final oral examination.
If the teacher cannot be present on the exam day, a questionnaire of 15 multiple-choice questions will be distributed (only one correct answer). The teacher indicates the examination procedure and its evaluation at the beginning of the lessons.

Contents

The course includes two sections:
1) General pharmacology: this section describes the principles that underlie the human-drug interactions and that, in turn, is divided into two parts, the one related to Pharmacokinetics (the effects that the body has on drugs) and the one on Pharmacodynamics (the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the therapeutic, unwanted, and toxic effects of drugs).
2) Special Pharmacology: this section describes the characteristics of some classes of drugs with particular attention to i) drugs used to treat pain and inflammation, ii) drugs affecting skeletal muscle, and iii) pharmacology of the central nervous system.
