Course Objectives

This course aims to stimulate critical reflection on the phonetic, morphological, syntactical, semantic and pragmatic aspects of English as well as its socio-cultural dimensions, thereby developing your language, communicative, cultural, analytical and critical skills at B1 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). More specifically, by the end of this course, you will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding:- know the fundamentals of English linguistics (phonetics, syntax, lexis and the socio-cultural factors that have favoured the spread pf English all over the world);- recognise language varieties;- be aware of external factors that influence the effectiveness and interpretation of a text.Making judgements:- assess the communicative situation and choose the degree of mediation needed;- critically analyse a text.Communication skills:- understand and producie oral and written texts;- implement language mediation strategies for written texts;- use suitable vocabulary and syntax as required by the communicative situation.

Course Prerequisites

In order to make the most of the course classes, you should have prior knowledge of English at A2 level of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) at least.

Teaching Methods

This course will consist of interactive classes during which you will be introduced to the main concepts of English linguistics and you will be invited to take part in discussions as well as group activities aimed at enhancing your reading comprehension, as well as your critical, analytical, writing, listening comprehension and speaking skills.
The course classes will be complemented by sessions held by the language experts of the CLA (Centro Linguistico di Ateneo), which are essential to strengthen your language skills and achieve the expected competence level. Attendance at the course lectures and the CLA classes is highly recommended, since the test will be an integral part of the Lingua inglese I exam. The result of the CLA test will contribute to the final course exam mark.
For any further information on the language experts’ sessions and test, please see the CLA web page.

Assessment Methods

The final exam consists of two parts, written and oral, both entirely in English. You must pass the written part before taking the oral.

Written exam:

A section covering the application of the contents of the full Lingua inglese I course
A section based on the contents of the lettorato classes.

The whole written exam is taken in one session.
Oral exam:

Presentation of the contents of the full Lingua inglese I course
Interactions based on the contents of the lettorato classes.

The whole oral exam takes place in the same sitting.
Both exams aim at assessing the students’ theoretical knowledge, cultural awareness, and the critical, analytical and communicative skills acquired within the Lingua Inglese I course, as well as the language competencies developed during the lettorato classes. The same exam format will be used for both attending and non-attending students.
Exam dates will be published on the web pages of both the Modern Languages and Cultures Department and on the CLA. You are expected to register for your written and oral exam on Esse3.
The final evaluation is one final mark on a 30-point scale deriving from the average of your written and oral exam results. The written exam will be held once within each of the three exam sessions (summer, autumn, and winter), while oral exams will take place twice within each session. In case you cannot complete the exam in one session, your written exam mark will be valid until the winter session of the current academic year. Further information on the exam will be provided in due course and will be made available on the course Moodle site.

You will also be invited to think about the English language from diatopic and diastratic perspectives, thus focusing on some of the varieties currently used in anglophone countries and by different social communities.
