Course Objectives

The course aims to provide students with a solid and practical foundation in the organization of healthcare services, guiding them toward an understanding of the role nurses play within organizational and care processes. The focus is placed both on the acquisition of theoretical principles and on the development of competencies that are useful in everyday professional practice.
By the end of the course, students will be able to navigate the main models and theories of healthcare organization, understand their underlying logic, and recognize how these frameworks can be used to interpret the complexity of hospitals and community services. They will be familiar with the different organizational configurations and understand the mechanisms through which healthcare professionals coordinate their activities within teams.
From an applied perspective, students will be able to analyze real organizational situations using the models presented during the course and to understand how the nursing role adapts to various organizational settings. They will be capable of interpreting the principles underlying care-intensity and complexity-based organizational models, identifying critical issues, needs, and opportunities for improving care processes.
The course will also foster the development of critical thinking in evaluating the functioning of healthcare services. Students will learn to observe organizational contexts with awareness and reflection, formulating well-founded judgments on organizational models, including considerations of quality, safety, efficiency, and professional ethics.
From a communication standpoint, students will be encouraged to express themselves effectively within team-based work, to present and discuss organizational analyses, and to propose ideas and solutions in a structured and professional manner. These communication skills represent a fundamental asset for working in complex healthcare environments.

Contents

This course, delivered over 32 hours of teaching for a total of 4 credits, introduces the fundamental principles of organizational theory applied to healthcare services, with particular attention to nursing contexts.
Through classical and contemporary organizational theories, students analyze the functioning of healthcare organizations as complex adaptive systems, learning to interpret structures, processes, and professional relationships.
The course explores the main interpretative models—organizational metaphors, the systemic perspective, coordination mechanisms, and Mintzberg’s organizational configurations—while deepening the understanding of the nurse’s role in ensuring effective care processes. It presents the organizational models most widely used in the healthcare sector, with specific attention to care-intensity and complexity-based organization, to the evolution of nursing roles and functions within reengineering processes, and to the methods used for measuring care intensity.
The course also integrates elements of organizational behavior, teamwork, multiprofessional collaboration, communication, and change management.
