Syllabus

Course Objectives

The program provides the students with an introduction to the themes related to the measurement in psychology and basic concepts to deal with problems of quantification and quantitative data processing. Regarding the learning expectations, the student is required to demonstrate acquisition of the following objectives:

1. Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of psychometrics;

2. Understanding of the psychometric concepts associated with scientific research;

3. Skills in the application of fundamental elements of statistical analysis of psychological data, as well as the use in the field of prevention;

4. The capacity to deal in a critical way with problems related to psychometrics and to communicate efficiently one’s own reflections on it.

Course Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites.

Teaching Methods

Classes in the lecture hall; exercises; simulations.

The classes are organized in 64 hours of frontal teaching, subdivided in 2 classes of 3 hours a week, based on the academic schedule.

During the classes, the professor will teach the themes both at the theoretical and at the practical level with exercises that foresee a strong interactive component between teacher and students.

Moreover, the course will make use of CONNECT, an online platform for individual exercising at theoretical and practical levels. The personal access code of the platform will be provided to the students together with the text book (Elementi di Psicometria, McGraw-Hill Education).

The E-Learning platform offered by UdA (https://elearning.unich.it ) will be regularly used to stimulate interactive teaching, to share teaching materials, and to support the exercises.

Assessment Methods

Type of exam:

written exam

The modality of the examination:

The exam consists of two tests.

The partial written test (around mid-May) consists of exercises (10 questions for a maximum of 10 points) to be completed with the aid of the form and the calculator (under no circumstances is the use of electronic devices permitted). Participation in the partial midterm is optional and not tied to attendance. Those who do not participate in the partial must recover the part of the exercises together with the theory in the official exam session.

It then concludes with a second multiple-choice written exam during the official exam session with 20 theoretical questions (max. 20 points). Each question has four alternative answers, only one of which is the correct one. The correct answer results in the attribution of one point, the incorrect answer (or more answers given or no answer given) results in the attribution of zero points. There is no oral exam.

The topics of the exam reflect those discussed during the classes and present in the course program.

The final vote (max. 30) will consist of the sum of the points attributed to the 20 multiple choice questions (20 points) and to those assigned to the 5 steps of the 2 exercises (10 points).

Evaluation:

final vote

2. Variables (educational objectives 2 and 3)

3. Scales of measurement;

4. Frequencies and their distributions (educational objectives 2 and 3);

5. Tables and graphs (educational objectives 2 and 3);

6. Measures of central tendency: mean, mode and median (educational objectives 2 and 3);

7. Measures of dispersion: standard deviation and variance (educational objectives 2 and 3);
