Course Objectives


The course describes the fundamental biological structures at the various levels of organization of living matter and the general unitary principles that govern the functioning of different biological units in their energetic and informational logic. The course also illustrates the principles governing the diversification of biological units, both throughout evolutionary history and through behavioral interactions, including consideration of pathological psychological conditions.
The course aims to introduce students to the mechanisms underlying cellular activity, the functioning of the organism through reproduction, its defenses, and its relationship with the environment. Students will also be able to learn about the functioning of neurons, including in relation to mental activity. The course also aims to introduce evolutionary theories in light of new knowledge.
The course contributes to the achievement of the educational objectives of the program by providing students with theoretical knowledge and fundamental methodological tools to understand and analyze the main themes of the relevant discipline. Specifically, students must have acquired:
an adequate understanding of psychological knowledge within the context of the natural, human, and social sciences;the ability to critically address issues related to the subjects of psychology's study and to effectively communicate their reflections on them.Expected learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding:Acquire basic multidisciplinary knowledge, with particular reference to biomedical explanations of human behavior and the contribution of the human and social sciences to the genesis of psychological theory.
Applied knowledge and understanding:Develop an awareness of the very nature of the Psychological Sciences, which, as such, must incorporate and not underestimate the contributions of certain biomedical and humanistic disciplines that have allowed psychology itself to become a science.
Making judgments:Acquire the ability to compare different theoretical perspectives.
Base knowledge on criteria of scientific rigor.
Communication skills:Ability to present acquired knowledge through oral presentations and written essays on topics or open-ended questions.
Learning skills:Develop the ability to reflect on study and learning topics and to reflect on one's own skills and learning processes.

Course Prerequisites


Successful participation in the course requires a basic preparation consistent with the level of teaching, in terms of fundamental theoretical and methodological knowledge in the relevant subject area.A good ability to understand and revise academic texts is also recommended, as well as adequate familiarity with the specialized vocabulary of the discipline.Any formal prerequisites must be verified in the student's study plan.

Teaching Methods


Courses are delivered in person and involve the integrated use of various teaching methods, selected consistently with the expected learning outcomes. Specifically, the teaching activity is structured as follows:
- Classroom lectures, aimed at conveying theoretical content, systematizing key concepts, and acquiring disciplinary language;- Seminars, including those with external instructors or industry experts, aimed at exploring specific topics or case studies;
Attendance is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended, as active participation in the various teaching activities significantly contributes to the achievement of the course's learning objectives.

Assessment Methods


The exam consists of an oral exam, designed to assess learning, conceptual mastery, language skills, and interpretation and analysis skills.The exam lasts approximately 20 minutes.The exam will be graded on a scale of 0 to 30 (with possible honors). A score of 18 to 23 indicates sufficient learning, a score of 23 to 28 indicates good learning, a score of 28 to 30 indicates excellent learning, and a score of "with honors" indicates particular analytical and critical reasoning skills related to the course topics.
For attending students, partial tests or early exam sessions may be scheduled during the semester.Learning assessment is via a written exam consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers, of which only one is correct. The questions cover the entire course syllabus. The grade is expressed in thirtieths. The final score is determined based on the number of correct answers. The passing threshold is 18/30. Incorrect or unanswered questions do not incur any penalties. The test is structured to distinguish different levels of competence, consistent with the expected learning outcomes.

The program covers the fundamentals of cellular and molecular biology, starting with the chemical composition of living matter, with particular attention to water and its properties, which are essential for biological reactions. The main biomolecules—carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids—are analyzed, highlighting their chemical, physical, and biological characteristics and their role in cellular metabolism and structure.
The program then moves on to the study of viruses, particular biological forms lacking autonomous metabolism, and cellular organization, with a comparison between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Biological membranes are explored both from a structural perspective and for their role in cell-environment interactions.
Another part of the program covers the principles of thermodynamics applied to biological systems, the function of enzymes, and the mechanisms that regulate ATP production, both in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Mitosis and meiosis are also studied, with a focus on the phases and regulation of the cell cycle.
Ample space is dedicated to molecular genetics, starting with the structure and replication of DNA, its organization in the cell, and the transmission of genetic information. The role of RNA, transcription and translation mechanisms, protein synthesis, and post-translational modifications such as glycosylation are examined. The regulation of gene expression, which is essential for cellular differentiation, is also analyzed.
The program continues with the study of the nerve cell and the transmission of electrical impulses, signal transduction mechanisms, and hormonal regulation by the endocrine system. The immune system is also explored in depth, distinguishing between nonspecific and specific defenses, with a focus on humoral immunity, cell-mediated immunity, and immunological memory.
Finally, the processes of reproduction, both asexual and sexual, and human reproduction are explored. The evolutionary section covers the Darwinian concept of evolution, the synthetic theory, and the phenomena of microevolution and macroevolution, including the evolution of primates. The program concludes with an introduction to the biology of the mind, addressing the link between oxidative stress and mental disorders.
