Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course intends to give the student basic knowledge about:
- the composition and function of the human genome
- the importance of genetic factors for origin of Hereditary diseases,
- abnormalities and developmental disorders in humans .
- the management of psychological problems of patients during the genetic counseling.

Course Prerequisites

No special prerequisites are required

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons with slide support.
The frequency is optional, recommended, and the final exam will be the same for attending and non-attending students

Assessment Methods

The exam will consist of an oral interview with the teacher aimed at assessing the knowledge and understanding of the topics covered during the course.
The mark is expressed in thirtieths. "

Contents

The course on Medical Genetics will deal with topics focused on the study of the genetic basis of the normal and pathological human characters. Topics such as the genetics of congenital diseases, genetics of cancer, genetics of common diseases, reproduction, prenatal diagnosis, neonatal screening will be analyzed.
Particular interest will be devoted to the psychological problems related to the execution of genetic tests and to the management of patients' psychological problems during the genetic counseling.
