Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (09/02/2026 - 30/05/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The first educational aim is the understanding of the neurophysiological mechanisms of neuronal function, starting from its basic cellular metabolism, passing by the knowledge of bioelectric mechanisms allowing for the realization of membrane and action potentials, to arrive to the biochemical mechanisms that characterize the synapse and neurotrasmitter release. A second aim is the understanding of the main organizational and integrative mechanisms of the nervous system, from both the anatomical and anatomofunctional standpoint. A third aim deals with the study of cerebral mechanisms at the basis of sensation and perception.
The student will acquire the theoretical framework of the abov-described topics, as weel as: the ability to autonomously apply the theoretical and methodological knowledge; autonomy of judgment and critical analysis when approaching to neuroscientific studies; the ability to communicate their knowledge with expert and non-expert colleagues; scientific / professional tools of continuing education useful for autonomously increasing their neuroscientific skills.

Course Prerequisites

The main prerequisite is the understanding of cell biology. A basic knowledge of chemistry and physics is required.

Teaching Methods

Class lessons with recourse to projection of slides.

Assessment Methods

In the first exam session, the examination will consist of a written multiple choice test composed of thirty items. Each question is associated to four response alternatives, only one of which is correct. The correct response entails attribution of one point, the wrong response (or more responses given, or no response given) entails the attribution of zero points. In case of passing the written examination, the student can undertake an oral examination upon request, thus integrating the result hitherto obtained. The oral examination can be carried out in English upon request.
In subsequent exam sessions, the teacher will determine the format of the exam (written or oral) according to the number of registered students.

More information

Office hours are held weekly, by appointment, in the professor’s office located in "Blocco A di Psicologia". Students are invited to check the instructor’s institutional webpage for updated office hours and contact details.
For any questions, students can contact the instructor at: d.marzoli@unich.it.
In addition to the standard teaching hours, students may take part in optional supplementary activities, including:

Tutoring sessions to support exam preparation and reinforce key concepts;
Optional lab sessions or practical activities, scheduled during the semester and communicated during class or via the elearning platform;
External seminars or guest lectures on topics relevant to the course, when available.

Participation in these activities is voluntary and does not affect the final grade, but it is strongly recommended to enhance the learning experience and deepen the practical understanding of course content.
