Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course aims to offer expert knowledge of children socio-emotional development and to give knowledge and practical competences on the understanding of the quality of interactive and socio-emotional development of infants. The student will be able to reflect on the described theories’ aspects and on relative practice applications on research and clinical work with parents and children. The student will be able to administer, code instruments aimed to evaluate attachment and to write an essay.

Course Prerequisites


Basic knowledge of attachment theory and socio-emotional development.

Teaching Methods


The course is delivered in person and combines different teaching approaches that align with the expected learning outcomes. The main methods include:

Classroom lectures, aimed at presenting theoretical frameworks and key concepts, and providing a structured overview of the course content;
Practical sessions and case study discussions, to help students apply their knowledge and develop analytical and critical thinking skills;
Seminars with invited speakers, offering in-depth exploration of specific topics and opportunities to engage with professionals and researchers;
Group activities, designed to enhance teamwork, communication, and independent judgement;

Attendance is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended, as active participation in the various learning activities greatly supports the achievement of the course’s intended learning outcomes.

Assessment Methods


The exam consists in two parts: an oral exam with open questions on the whole program and a written essay. The oral exam has the aim to verify the knowledge of the main thematic related to the course. The written essay is realized at home and consists of the administration, coding and comment of the tools described during the practical part of the course. The final vote is composed the 80% by the oral exam and the 20% by the written essay.

Infant interactive and emotion regulation development. The parent-infant relationship in the first years of life, micro and macro analytic aspects of the interaction and its role in child socio-emotional development. Tolls for the observation and the evaluation of the parent-infant interaction. The attachment theory and the evaluation of attachment in children and adults. How to support parenting.
