Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to offer expert knowledge of
children social and emotional development.
At the end of the course, students will be able
to:
- Know in details how social and
emotional competence (considered as
a multi-component phenomenon)
develop across 4me starting from the
first months of life; protective and risk
factors involved in the social-
emotional development (including the
development of emotion regulation,
empathy and moral development)
across contexts (family, school, peers);
methods for assessing socio-
emotional development and
intervention to promote children’s
positive socio-emotional
development; theories on social and
emotional development
- Elaborate and correctly apply
theoretical knowledge into the
different contexts of development,
including typical and atypical
- To analyze in a critical and
independent way the scientific
literature in the field
- To deepen the understanding of

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of infant development theories; knowledge of methods used to investigate infant’s development; ability to understand English papers.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures and practical activities. Student’s active participation to classes is highly recommended. Supplemental material for class and homework will be provided. Attending students will be required to write short essays, give presentations and read scientific articles. Videos, presentations and scientific article will be used a didactic material. Attendance is not compulsory, but highly recommended.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists in an oral exam with open
questions on the whole program. The oral
exam has the aim to verify the knowledge of
the main thematic related to the course.
