Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course provides the tools necessary for understanding the main theoretical approaches in the field of social psychology of health, as well as related topics and methods of the discipline. It is in line with the educational objectives of the course of study in psychology and, specifically, in continuity with the teaching "Group Dynamics in Organizations."
In order to:
(a) comprehend the conceptual and methodological nodes of the social psychology of health;
(b) reflect critically (and independently) on the primary theoretical models presented;
(c) critically evaluate the findings of studies within the discipline that have analyzed the determinants and correlates of health in different contexts;
(d) apply the knowledge and key skills they have learned in different social and organizational contexts.
By the end of the course, students should have developed skills in understanding and using the technical language of the discipline of study, in effectively communicating their knowledge and critical opinions on the topics covered, and in independently exploring topics of interest in depth.

Course Prerequisites


It is advised to have a basic understanding of social psychology.

Teaching Methods


The course includes 60 hours of teaching that will be divided into theoretical frontal lectures and practical exercises aimed at consolidating the presented topics. Also planned are small- and large-group discussions and work-groups, evaluations of national and international projects, and viewings of documentary.

Assessment Methods


The exam is divided into two sections: a written test and a presentation to a professional audience. The written exam assesses the knowledge that the student(s) have learned throughout the course through 21 multiple-choice questions and 1 open-ended question. The presentation to an expert audience entails the student(s) (or groups of students) making a about 8–10 minutes presentation of a topic of interest to colleagues in the classroom and/or subject matter experts, with the use of a PowerPoint presentation or similar programs. The subject of the presentation must be agreed with the teacher.
The final grade will be calculated as follows: max 21 points for multiple-choice questions, max 5 points for the open-ended question and 5 points for the presentations.

Contents


The course offers two modules specifically.
a. The first module will explore the development of the idea of health (and health promotion), analyze its unique features in relation to the concepts of disease and prevention, and critically examine the peculiarities of the bio-psycho-social model as well as the procedure that overcame the so-called bio-medical model. Additionally, this module will examine at the primary correlates and determinants of health.
b. The second module's goal is to examine the key methods for promoting health in both social and professional settings. The most successful health promotion programs will be critically examined, with a focus on identifying their strengths and shortcomings, in a variety of contexts, including urban areas, places of employment, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities.
