Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to develop theoretical, methodological and operational knowledge in relation to the topic of psychological health related to work and the major factors (particularly psychosocial) that are able to influence it. A further objective is to present and critically evaluate the main guidelines proposed to assess work-related stress and psychosocial risk factors in work organizations, as well as the major intervention options from a primary, secondary and tertiary perspective. The course also aims to strengthen the ability to critically evaluate the most used measures of psychological health and well-being at work and the scientific evidence relating to the relationship between working conditions, psychological health and worker performance.

Course Prerequisites

None, although it is helpful to have already taken an undergrad course in the area of Work and organizational psychology.

Teaching Methods

The main modality will be the frontal lesson. This will be complemented with classroom discussions on the topics proposed, case studies (individual and organizational) and seminars held by expert colleagues (freelance professionals and academics) invited to delve into specific aspects of the course program.

Assessment Methods

The exam is written and consists of a test with a series of questions (18), of which 2 are open and 16 are closed. Open questions require writing in the available space (about 10 lines). Closed questions have five different response options, of which only one is correct. No points are deducted for incorrect answers. The test assigns a maximum of 31 points (11 points overall for open questions; 20 points overall for closed questions). For non-attending students, the questions refer exclusively to the two assigned texts. For attending students, the questions are based on the slides and the assigned text (Balducci & Fraccaroli, Stress and Psychosocial Risks in Organizations). The evaluation of open questions is done in light of the following criteria:
- relevance of the answer provided;
- completeness of the answer;
- clarity of the answer.
If one or more of the criteria mentioned is not met, the score assigned to the answer is scaled down to the minimum assignable (zero). A pass mark is achieved if 18 points are obtained by adding together the points obtained in the open questions and the closed questions. As a guideline, a mark in the low score range (up to 23/30) means that the student has acquired adequate knowledge in most of the topics in the program, but there are deficiencies in several of the open questions (answers that are not always relevant, incomplete and/or unclear) or there is a significant number of errors in the closed questions. A mark in the intermediate range (24-26/30) means that the student has acquired more than adequate knowledge in most of the topics in the program, as evidenced for example by answers to the open questions that are generally relevant, complete and clear and by a limited number of errors in the closed questions. A mark in the high range (27-30/30) means that the student has acquired good or excellent knowledge in all of the topics in the program, as evidenced for example by answers to the open questions that are satisfactory in terms of relevance, completeness and clarity and by few errors in the closed questions. The ‘lode’ is awarded in the case of a test without errors. The time available for the exam is 45 minutes.
Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders are invited to contact the teacher at least seven days before the test if they wish to evaluate the possibility of an adaptation of the exam format (e.g. oral exam).

The slides of the meetings will be made available at the beginning of the course through the e-learning platform (http://elearning.unich.it/)

Contents

The course offers an in-depth analysis of the topic of well-being and mental health in the workplace and their close relationship with performance, adopting an Occupational Health Psychology approach. After a brief methodological introduction aimed at familiarizing with the main research designs adopted in this field, the main theoretical concepts and models that have been proposed to understand well-being and work-related distress are explored (e.g. stress and burnout, effort-reward imbalance, recovery, demand-control). Particular attention is paid to the measurement of the different constructs and to the examination of the available empirical evidence. The risk assessment process in organizations and the different intervention options (primary, secondary and tertiary) aimed at protecting the psychological health of workers and preserving their motivation and performance are then illustrated.

Course Language

Italian.
