Course Objectives


By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the fundamental concepts of health psychology, including the biopsychosocial model and its application to health and illness.
- Describe the different levels of prevention (primary, secondary, tertiary) and their psychological significance.
- Analyze the relationship between psychological well-being, quality of life, and physical health.
- Explain coping mechanisms and their impact on health outcomes.
- Explore the bidirectional interaction between mind and body, including psychosomatic processes.
- Recognize the roles and functions of psychologists in health care, educational, and societal contexts.
- Critically evaluate research findings and apply theoretical knowledge to practical health psychology issues.

Course Prerequisites


Students are expected to have a basic understanding of general psychology principles, including developmental, social, and cognitive psychology. No prior specific knowledge of health psychology is required.

Teaching Methods


Lectures will be supplemented by interactive discussions, case studies, and review of selected articles and materials provided by the professor. Active participation is encouraged to deepen understanding and develop critical thinking skills.

Assessment Methods


Students will be evaluated through a combination of participation in discussions, class exposition, group work, and a final oral exam designed to assess the integration of theoretical knowledge and applied understanding.

Contents


This course offers an introduction to the main areas of health psychology, with a focus on the biopsychosocial approach to health and illness. Students will explore the psychological factors that influence physical health and illness, understand models of prevention, and analyze the complex interplay between mind and body, risk and protective factors for health in lifespan. The course will also cover the role of the psychologist in diverse health-related contexts, including schools, hospitals, and community settings.
