Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students will learn a wide range of extreme geological events in terms of their examples and mechanisms. Students will foster their capacity to think about these extreme events by themselves and also to provide assessment for natural hazards.

Course Prerequisites

Courses in geosciences preferable

Lectures/discussions (and possibly seminars, field excursion)

Assessment Methods

The final exam for this integrated course (GE235 - PLANETARY GEOLOGY AND EXTREME GEOLOGICAL EVENTS, combined GE148 and GE155) will be conducted as oral presentation of a topic selected by the student and it should be related to these courses. The final exam will judge the student in terms of the progress in learning of the courses' subjects, and of the capacity to select a proper topic, add original interpretation and prepare and give a professional-level presentation. The score will be given up to 30 (+lode). Other elements of consideration include attendance, discussions, short presentations, etc. during the courses.

Texts

Bibliographical references will be communicated during the lectures.

Contents

Extreme geological events include impact cratering, explosive volcanic eruptions, large-scale landslides, catastrophic flooding, tsunami, etc. Many of such extreme events, both recent and those in geological records, are known on Earth and other planetary bodies in the Solar System. The course consists of review of these processes, and opportunity to discuss their importance in geology and also impact on environment and humans.
