Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course analyzes the structural aspects and organizational logics of the securities markets, as well as the classification of the various financial instruments and intermediaries. Both activities pursue the aim of making the underlying reasons to the organizational logic to which the market rules are finalized understood, with two perspectives to prepare the student both for the activity of consultant of the subjects in financial surplus (investors), and of those in financial deficit (typically enterprises and public administration with particular reference to the eventual choices of the latter to cover their financial needs by resorting to the securities market).
At the end of the study of the discipline the student will know:
On the primary market:
direct the issuer's choices of financial instruments towards the identification of the fair price for the transferable securities, identify the type of financial intermediary able to assist the issuer towards the positive conclusion of the issue and the management of the prices of the instruments issued on the secondary in the periods immediately following the issue.
On the secondary market:
For investors: composing and recomposing their portfolio continuously, using both market and issuer analysis tools, as well as knowledge acquired on the rules of market operation and the consequent impacts on the securities valorisation system.
For issuers: prepare the economic-financial information to and from the company required by current regulations and any other information deemed useful in order to maintain effective interaction with the markets and guarantee a high reputational standard for issuers.

Teaching Methods

Mixed modality: frontal and online lessons carried out with the help of slides. Analysis of concrete cases taken from the economic press; testimonies of operators in the securities and financial sector.

Assessment Methods

The assessment of students' level of learning will be carried out through an oral exam aimed at verifying both the communication skills, the mastery of the technical language, and also the clarity of exposition, and finally the knowledge and skills falling within the training objectives to be evaluated.

The course deals with issues relating to the economics of trading systems for basic financial instruments and derivatives. Through a segmentation of market types and an assessment of the characteristic operations of the various operators, such as financial intermediaries and other investors, the course aims to achieve skills relating to:

financial instruments in their differentiated characteristics;
the functioning of the financial markets;
the operations of financial intermediaries and other operators who have a role within the financial system;
the transfer of financial flows from savings training centers to the economic system;
the use of new technologies in financial transactions.
