Course Objectives


Expected learning outcomes.
At the end of the course the student must possess basic knowledge of sociology, its origins, the main sociological paradigms, the objects of study, the methods of analysis of institutions and social phenomena.
The course aims to transmit the following skills and knowledge.
Knowledge and understanding of the following topics:
- Identify the origins and developments of sociology;
- Know the main authors and themes of the discipline;
- Identify the objectives and activities of the sociological survey.
Judgment autonomy.
At the end of the course the student should know:
- identify the origins and developments of sociology;
- know the methods of sociological investigation;
- know the main topics of sociology;
- acquire the concepts and the theoretical perspectives of sociology;
- know how to identify the goals and activities of the sociologist.
Communication skills. At the end of the course the student must know how to use the specific language of sociology; must know the concepts and methods of the discipline.

Course Prerequisites


No specific knowledge and skills are required and there are no propaedeutic constraints.

Teaching Methods


Frontal lessons. Possible use of slides.

Assessment Methods


The final exam consists of an oral exam on the contents of the course. The knowledge of the contents and bibliography foreseen by the course, the quality of the oral expression, the critical and methodological skills will be evaluated. The score ranges from 1 to 30 with honors, according to the following: 1-17 insufficient, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honors excellent.

Contents


The course provides students with knowledge on the origins and developments of sociology and on the role of the discipline in the study of society and social phenomena. It explores the basic concepts of sociology and analyzes the role of social institutions in contemporary society. Specific attention is paid to the classical sociological tradition, to the work on the method of Durkheim and Weber, and to the development in the field of contemporary sociology.
