Syllabus

Course Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the basic tools for understanding, from an eminently sociological and partly political point of view, the history and current developments of the welfare state in Italy in light of the broader European and partly global context, combining attention to general principles and systematic theories with an in-depth analysis of individual fields and the debate about the most pressing problems and the proposed remedies, according to the approach developed in the scientific circles of the University of Milan. The second part of the module will focus on the theme of family policies in Italy and Europe, with the necessary connections to other fundamental aspects that interact with it (demography, relationships between genders and between generations, education and instruction, work, multiculturalism, conceptions of existence), trying to highlight, from an exquisitely sociological perspective, the reasons for the current crisis of the family and the useful strategies to stem it.
