Syllabus

Course Objectives


The learning objectives are: to acquire, understand and be able to use the models and methods of planning and social evaluation; to know the main methods and tools of sociological analysis applied to the sphere of social service; to know the models, methods and processes related to the design of social interventions and services.
Expected learning outcomes are: to acquire knowledge, skills and abilities to define and coordinate programs, projects and evaluation processes in the context of services and social and socio-health interventions; carry out quantitative and qualitative evaluations of interventions, services and social policies; apply the knowledge and techniques to the social evaluation of services.
Knowledge and understanding ability.
At the end of the course the student must know:
- plans, programs and projects used in the construction of welfare system;
- the models and methods of social planning;
- the cycle of social planning;
- the methods and tools of social planning;
- the objectives, methods and models of social evaluation;
- the approaches and methods of social planning;
- social assessment;
- the models and methods of social evaluation.

Autonomy of judgment.
At the end of the course the student must be able to recognize and apply: - models and methods of social planning;
- models and research methods of social evaluation.
Communication skills.
At the end of the course the student must gain a correct command of the specific language referred to the studied contents; know the concepts and the operational models related to the analysis and the construction of the welfare systems.

No specific knowledge and skills are needed and no prerequisites are required.

Lectures. Possible use of slides.

Assessment Methods


The final assessment consists of an oral exam on the entire syllabus. The aim is to assess students’ skills and in particular, an understanding of the issues discussed during the course, an appropriate knowledge of the bibliography in the course programme, a correct command of the specific language as well as critical and methodological abilities will be evaluated. The grading scale goes from 1 to 30 with honours (cum laude): 1-17 fail, 18-21 sufficient, 22-24 fair, 25-27 good, 28-29 very good, 30-30 with honours (cum laude) excellent.

Contents


The course describes and explains the models of planning and social evaluation in historical developments and in the current structure of Italian welfare.
The course focuses on the basic concepts related to social planning. The various models, methods of planning and social planning are presented along with the various steps in the planning process of social and health policies, interventions and services.
The analysis continues with the presentation of the concepts, models and methods of social evaluation with reference to the evaluation of policies, projects and interventions in the social and socio-health area.
