Course Objectives

The educational objectives of the course are to acquire the basic concepts that are at the basis of welfare, then analyze the evolutionary aspects of the state with particular reference to the welfare state.
The intent is to examine the elements underlying the evolution of the main models that distinguish, in the various national realities, different ways of understanding welfare.
We will also perform an analysis of the main social policies and areas of intervention, both public and private, especially as regards the new individual and collective needs that characterize our welfare system.
The aim is to provide students with the ability to orient themselves in the Italian social welfare system, comparing them with the main reference models, through a sociological approach that takes into due consideration also the historical evolutionary and economic aspects.

Contents

The course is divided into three blocks, coordinated with each other, which are articulated through different moments of observation ranging from the general to reach the specific case.
The first part of the course is dedicated to the general analysis of the origins of welfare through the deepening of the evolutionary aspects and transformations of the state, with particular reference to the social state.
In the second part a comparative analysis of the main models, systems and welfare regimes is conducted.
The last part tends to examine the Italian welfare example, starting from its origins, retracing the steps and the reasons that have outlined the current paradigm. In particular, the main responses given to the various social needs will be highlighted, including through an appropriate study of the protection of social rights. We will then proceed to an analysis of the answers provided by the State, the market and the Third sector to the various individual and collective needs.
