Syllabus

Course Objectives


The course, in line with the educational objectives of the degree program, aims to introduce students to the main concepts, themes, and problematic issues of anthropology and those theoretical aspects that continue to occupy a central place in the discipline's debate. This will help them understand the socio-cultural, material, and symbolic practices and phenomena of contemporary societies, with particular reference to crime and violence in its various forms, and will develop the capacity for reflection and critical discussion on interdisciplinary issues.

Assessment methods:
Written exam with open-ended questions and a final grade expressed out of thirtieths.

Contents


The course is divided into two parts.
The first, introductory part, will focus on the main themes and issues of cultural anthropology (Culture(s) - Culture, Identity, Otherness - Cultural Diversity - Ethnocentrism, Relativism, Critical Ethnocentrism - Race, Racism, Forms of Discrimination and Inclusion - Ethnic Groups and Ethnicity - Cultures, Forms of Kinship, Family - Subsistence Systems - Anthropological Research) and the developments the discipline has undergone in contemporary debate in relation to its public and applied use.
The second part, of a specific nature, examines the concepts and themes of deviance, crime, and regulatory frameworks defined in socio-cultural terms.
