Course Objectives


The course is part of the general objective of the course of study to provide knowledge about the history and use of money, also in economic function. Analysing the many aspects and the different forms of interaction between the various cultural elements within the Mediterranean ancient, aims to provide the student with the terminological tools, historical, artistic and economic to understand the ways of interaction in the Mediterranean between the Classical Age and the Middle Ages.

Teaching Methods


The course is structured in 42 hours of frontal teaching, divided in 2-hour lessons according to the academic calendar. Lectures with ppt presentations, possible seminars, educational visits. the frequency is optional, but recommended.

Assessment Methods


Oral exam with single final grade in thirtieths. The subject arguments will reflect those covered during the course and present in the program.

Numismatics as an historical-scientific discipline. Processes and modes of interaction between peoples of the ancient Mediterranean before the coin. Origin of coin and formation of the new concept of a means of exchange. Weight systems, production techniques, metals and monetary magistrates. Iconographic aspects, typological, propaganda and economical models of Greek, Italic, Roman and medieval coins. Examination of economic, cultural and artistic phenomena in the different geographical and cultural areas of the Mediterranean. Economy and circulation of goods and coins from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages in the Mediterranean basin.

Teaching plans to complete the student's training with historical and terminological and cognitive tools useful to deepen the iconographic aspects, artistic and economic, essential to better understand the function of money in the ancient and in the medieval world. The training will then be completed and enriched by the following skills:
Knowledge and understanding:
- describe the historical-geographical and economic-cultural areas of the area taken under consideration;
- list the coin types (typology, iconography, weight, etc....) in the various countryside production;
- explain the key characteristics of monetary issues and historical and cultural sectors;
- develop a critical sense on issues and modalities of ancient economy
Autonomy of judgment:
- connect economic, historical, artistic and technological aspects of production monetary policy;
- carry out general assessments of the economic, historical and monetary aspects
Skill communication:
the multidisciplinary communication skills is the main result of teaching. The student will be able to: - use a technical and scientific terminology related to economic and cultural processes ancient peoples;
- knowledge of artistic aspects and of socio-cultural reflections in the economic-monetary field
