Course Objectives


The teaching contributes to the realisation of the educational objectives of the Degree Course in Cultural Heritage, aiming to consolidate and deepen the knowledge and art-historical methodologies acquired by students during their three-year course of studies, both with a view to possible employment in publishing houses, public or private research and cultural institutes, cultural and academic foundations, and with a view to possible entry into PhD programmes.
Knowledge
By the end of the course students should be able to analyse and critically interpret complex figurative texts of the modern era, recognising their stylistic and technical peculiarities in relation to the context of origin.
Autonomy of judgement
Students should acquire sufficient skills to carry out a technical and critical appraisal of a work of art
Communication skills
Students must be able to explain in appropriate terms and in a clear manner art-historical themes and problems of the modern era to specialists and non-specialists in order to be able to implement profitable interdisciplinary synergies with scholars from related disciplines

Course Prerequisites


Interest in the subject of art history and knowledge, even basic knowledge, of the major Italian artists of the Renaissance and Baroque.

Teaching Methods


Lectures with presentation of images under study and reading of critical texts. Visits to museums and monuments or to current exhibitions are planned during the lecture period.

Assessment Methods


Oral examination, graded in thirtieths, aimed at testing the ability to present the topics covered during the course with clarity and independent judgement

Contents


The course aims to provide the outlines of the history of modern art in Italy and in a European perspective between the 15th century and the end of the 18th century. The most important artistic personalities of the four centuries will be analyzed and the tools for the critical reading of the most significant works of the Renaissance and Baroque will be provided. Aspects of patronage, collecting and the art market will be examined. The theme of otherness
