Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 21/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The class provides students with the tools to apply the direct stiffness method to the practical solution of structural frames made of different materials. The main objectives are:

Apply and understand the direct stiffness method (matrix structural analysis)
Interpret the results of matrix analyses of trusses and frames
Carry out practical examples for structural design

Course Prerequisites

First-level college degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture or equivalent (with class in Structural Analysis and Structural Mechanics)

Teaching Methods

The class involves lectures and in class problem assignements on the direct stiffness method. Homework problems are assigned.

Assessment Methods

Problems on the application of the direct stiffness method will be solved in class. There is going to be a single two-hour written midterm exam at the end of the module. Students who do not take or do not pass the midterm can take an equivalent two-hour written test during regular exam sessions. This written exam counts for one third of the total grade of the entire integrated course.

Contents

This class is the first part of an integrated course on Matrix Analysis of Structures. The first part deals with the direct stiffness method applied to frame structures. Starting from the differential equations of the bar and beam problems, solutions are derived and the element stiffness matrix computed. From here, the structure stiffness matrix is assembled, the global solution is found and the results are interpreted.
