Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 21/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The class provides students with the tools to apply the finite element method to the practical solution of 2D and 3D strucures made of different materials. The main objectives are:

Apply and understand the finite element method
Interpret the results of problems solved with the finite element method
Carry out practical examples for structural design

Course Prerequisites

First level college degree in Civil Engineering or Architecture or equivalent (with class in Structural Analysis and Structural Mechanics)

Teaching Methods

The class involves lectures and in class problem assignements on the finite element method. Homework problems are assigned. Students are required to carried out a small project that involves modeling and solution of a reinforced concrete frame with shear walls, loaded by gravity loads only.

Assessment Methods

Problems on the application of the finite element will be solved in class. There is going to be a single two-hour written midterm exam at the end of the module. Students who do not take or do not pass the midterm can take an equivalent two-hour written test during regular exam sessions. This written exam counts for one third of the total grade of the entire integrated course. The grade of the oral presentation and discussion of the final project on modeling and solution of a frame with shear walls counts for one third of the total grade of the entire integrated course.

Texts

Class notes are made available by the instructor

Contents

This class is the second part of an integrated course on Matrix Analysis of Structures. The second part deals with the finite element method applied to frames. Energy methods are used to derive the stiffness matrix of different line, plane and solid elements and the relevan internal forces (deformations, stresses and element forces). Students are required to carried out a small project that involves modeling and solution of a reinforced concrete frame with shear walls, loaded by gravity loads only.
