Syllabus

Course Objectives


Ability to describe sediments found in different depths and marine environments and understand the sedimentary processes that lead to their deposition; understand plate tectonics and its driving forces; consequences and importance of sea level changes; knowledge of the main geological and geophysical techniques for the observation of the seafloor; knowledge of the scientific ocean drilling, its history, achievements and status.

Course Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of Earth Science.

Teaching Methods


The lessons will be delivered in a blended format, with a first part that is mainly theoretical and conducted online, and a second part with a more practical component held in person.​​​​​​​

Assessment Methods

The learning will be assessed through two midterm exams and a final oral exam

Contents

The class will cover marine geology, including: ocean basins; marine sediments; ocean productivity; deep ocean drilling program. Furthermore, the survey methodologies will be discussed. Hands-on analysis of sample datasets will be included.
