Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (01/03/2025 - 15/06/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

This course aims to provide an in-depth knowledge of the atomic force microscopy experimental technique suitable for studying the surface properties of new materials at the nanometric scale. At the same time, part of the course will be dedicated to the fundamental principles of Raman spectroscopy and the study of the related instrumentation, with particular focus on its applications in the analysis of environmental matrices. The course includes theoretical lessons, for the study of the basic theoretical principles, and practical lessons in the laboratory to deepen the structural characterization of materials.

Course Prerequisites

General Chemistry

Teaching Methods

It consists of 3 ECTS divided in 1 ECTS, corresponding to 8 hours of lectures and 2 ECTS, corresponding to 22 hours of guided exercises in laboratory.

Assessment Methods

The final exam consists in compiling an essay on the topic mainly taken from recent bibliography.

Texts

• Ernesto Placidi, Introduzione alla microscopia a forza atomica.
• Fangzhou Xia, Ivo W. Rangelow, Kamal Youcef-Toumi, Active Probe Atomic Force Microscopy - A Practical Guide on Precision Instrumentation, Springer.
• Lectures notes and articles distributed in class.

Contents

• Theoretical principles of operation of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Raman Spectroscopy;
• Methods of analysis;
• Instruments set up and sample preparation;
• Applications in the environmental field with both the techniques.

Course Language

Italian

More information

The slides projected in the classroom during the Course are available in PDF format on the teaching website and on the elearning portal. The teachers are also available during office hours for further clarification on the topics covered in class. Several hours of laboratory work introduce the student to the manual skills necessary to prepare the sample and carry out the analyses.
