Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 23/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The progressive impoverishment of environmental quality due to the incorrect use of the territory and natural resources, in addition to the ongoing Climate Change, seriously endangers biodiversity, water supply, and therefore also food resources. The geochemical characterization of environmental matrices is therefore fundamental for the planning of all reclamation and recovery interventions to re-establish suitable levels of environmental quality and for the mitigation and adaptation to changes related to Global Warming (e.g. desertification, coastal erosion, etc.). The course provides theoretical knowledge on the geochemical characteristics of environmental matrices, on pollutants (inorganic and organic) and their environmental impacts. Furthermore, the course aims to implement practical skills for sampling and the use of analytical techniques such as, for example, UV-VIS Spectrophotometry and TXRF (X-ray Fluorescence Diffracting with Total Reflection) aimed at the geochemical characterization of water and soil environmental matrices.

Course Prerequisites

Degree in Geological Sciences

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be with frontal lessons, fieldwork, traing in lab

Assessment Methods

The verification of the alumn's learning is made through three writing tests during the semester. The aim is to verify the knowledge, understanding and appropriate use of technical language. The positive outcome of the test grants access to the final oral exam to test the logical path acquired necessary to face evironmental pollution issues.
