Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (22/09/2025 - 23/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims, on the one hand, to deepen theoretical, practical, and field-based knowledge in the field of structural geology of both ductile and brittle regimes, and on the other, to place structural analysis within a broader tectonic framework, up to the regional scale. A fundamental objective is to stimulate the student's interest in structural geology topics, as essential and indispensable tools for geological investigation, both in professional and research contexts.

Course Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree in Geological Sciences or other degrees that include courses providing foundational knowledge in basic structural geology, tectonics, and geological field mapping

Teaching Methods

Lectures, traditional and computer-based graphic exercises in the classroom; work on structural maps and geological cross-sections at the different scales; field survey and structural analysis. Each student will be personally involved in all phases of the program and will be encouraged to develop a critical understanding of what they learn."

Assessment Methods

Oral, graphic, and written assessments on the theoretical portion of the program. Individual and group assignments, including PowerPoint presentations, will be prepared. Partial assessments will be considered.

Texts

Twiss R.J. & Moores E. "Structural Geology" - W.H. Freeman and Company - New York
Fossen H. - Geologia Strutturale - Zanichelli Ed. a cura di G. Viola
Ramsay J. G. & Huber M.I. - The techniques of modern Structural Geology - 2 Folds and Fractures
lessons in PPT format and lecture notes provided by the teacher

Contents

Strain and stress analysis. Brittle deformation. Joints, normal faults, reverse faults, and strike-slip faults. Geometric and kinematic analysis at the different scales. Analysis of ductile and polyphase deformation with elements of crystalline basement geology. Folds, mesofolds, cleavages, foliations, lineations, boudinage; analysis of the relationships between minor structures and host structures. Fault rocks, kinematic indicators, and deformation mechanisms. Paleostress calculation. Construction of balanced and restored geological cross-sections. Field-based structural mapping and analysis, and structural map development.
