Course Objectives

Educational objectives: the course aims to provide the tools and knowledge necessary for the exploration of carbonate plays within sedimentary basins, through:1. the application of the main techniques of stratigraphic analysis for the subdivision of the filling of sedimentary basins into tectonic-stratigraphic units (megasequence approach);2. the application of the concepts of regional geology for the identification of the petroleum system elements in time and space;3. the illustration of the main depositional and sedimentological characters of the Mediterranean carbonate systems4. the illustration of some of the main proven carbonate plays of the Mediterranean and associated reservoirs;5. the application of the megasequence approach, of the concepts of regional geology and of the facies analysis for the identification and characterization of an exposed analogue of a carbonate reservoir

Course Prerequisites

Geological concepts related to the main geodynamic processes, from the rifting to the post-collisional phase; knowledge of the classifications of carbonate rocks. Ability to read geological maps and construction of geological cross sections.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, exercises and field work

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of an oral test and the realization of a report based on the group work carried out during the field work.
