Syllabus

Course Objectives


The Course aims to provide an introduction to social sustainability management from its definition to an in-depth look at management and assessment methods, metrics and tools.

LEARNING OUTCOMES EXPECTED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS UNDERSTANDING
After completing the course, students must be in possession of the knowledge for understanding:
- the nature of social impacts and the main difficulties associated with them;
- the role of system and product certifications in the management of social sustainability;
- the methodologies and metrics for assessing social aspects and impacts in organisations and supply chains.

JUDGEMENT
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Identify/develop links between the various issues in the multidisciplinary perspective;
- Apply relevant knowledge to the identification of the main points of force and weakness related to the social sustainability.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
At the end of the course students will acquire an appropriate specific technical-scientific language relating to the management and assessment of social sustainability.


Course Prerequisites


There is no prerequisite for this course.

Teaching Methods


The course is delivered by integrating inclusive teaching methods such as: flipped classroom; cooperative learning; problem solving and debating. Integrative teaching activities will enhance different learning styles, facilitate learning and create an opportunity for dialogue, discussion and collaboration.


Assessment Methods


Examination method: Oral​​​​​​​
Assessment methods:
The exam consists in an oral interview aimed at verifying the learning, the conceptual mastery, the vocabulary and the ability to interpret and synthesise. The examination questions include both descriptive and critical elements. Grading uses a 30-point scale.​​​​​​​

Contents


The Models and Methods of Social Sustainability Course analyses the issue of social sustainability from a theoretical and methodological as well as a practical point of view, by addressing approaches and metrics that are able to analyse, assess and manage it. In particular the following will be addressed: the nature of social impacts and the main difficulties related to them; the main models for managing social sustainability at both product and system level; methodologies, tools and metrics for assessing social aspects and impacts within organisations and the main supply chains
