Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

understand the biophysical and computational principles underlying omics data analysis;
use bioinformatic tools for the processing of biological and environmental datasets;
integrate biological information with indicators of pollution and climate change;
critically analyze results and discuss implications for public health and the environment;
apply interdisciplinary methodologies in the context of Earth and climate sciences.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of molecular biology and genetics.
Notions of physics and statistics.
Basic IT skills (use of data analysis environments, preferably Linux).

Teaching Methods

Lectures with multimedia support.
Discussion of scientific articles.
Thematic seminars with experts in bioinformatics, atmospheric physics, and environmental sciences.

Assessment Methods

Written exam with open-ended questions/data analysis exercises.
Oral presentation of an interdisciplinary project/paper.

Texts

Lesk A. M., Introduction to Bioinformatics, Oxford University Press.
Mount D. W., Bioinformatics: Sequence and Genome Analysis, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press.
Kesheri M. et al., Microbial Omics in Environment and Health.
Scientific articles and material provided by the lecturer (with a focus on exposome, environmental omics, climate-health).

Contents

The course introduces the fundamentals of bioinformatic analyses applied to omics data (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics), with particular reference to applications in the environmental and climate context. Topics include:

main acquisition techniques and omics data formats;
bioinformatic tools and pipelines;
correlations between biological data and environmental factors (air pollutants, radiation, climate stresses);
multi-omics integration methodologies for the assessment of effects on human health and ecosystems.
